My experience was great besides some unfortunate treatment by one of the female dentists (unsure of her name) due to using State insurance it seems. The whole interaction seemed unnecessary, but it escalated and I was left feeling ostracized and embarrassed. I have medical anxiety and especially so at the dentist - the combination of going to the dentist and a bad nights sleep would likely give me a high reading, which increases my blood pressure and anxiety. I mention that because they requested to take my blood pressure before my checkup and I declined as I had already checked at home, and did not want to see a high reading (increasing my medical anxiety) and also considered it unnecessary when receiving no numbing agents or nitrous oxide, but rather just a checkup (opening my mouth for a bit). I have also never been requested for this at a checkup. I have before when receiving nitrous oxide, but never at any of my hundreds of dental visits in Washington State throughout my life. I did share I would of course be happy to provide the reading should numbing or nitrous be needed. The tech was very kind regarding my request to skip that reading. I expect curiosity for saying no which she did have, and I kindly shared about my anxiety.

She understood and shared it would be needed if numbing agents were used but it was okay for now. The first woman dentist however was nothing short of attacking and rude. The first thing she said when she walked in the room was “so I understand you’re refusing to do a blood pressure reading”. It was a bad way to start, but I explained my anxiety, that I would rather not do the reading at this time, and I had never needed to before any checkup throughout my 30 years of dental care. This was unacceptable for her and she incessantly demanded a reason she considered valid for my denial. I explained again my medical anxiety, and the lack of need for it. She told me it was mandatory for treatment for people on State insurance, I told her that was contrary to every other clinic I’d been to and what her own technician said. It got so heated that she went silent and then aggressively lowered my chair and told me to open my mouth. I nearly complied but after that exchange I decided I did not want her to be performing dental work in my mouth.

I asked her if I could see a different provider and She loudly said “yep!”, stormed out of the room, and left me halfway lowered in an awkward position on the chair. I have never been treated like that by a medical professional. Needless to say, it only increased my anxiety and greatly disturbed the experience. Luckily a new dentist did come, and they were understanding and it went forward with no problem. They completed the checkup and scheduled me for additional work the following week. I know it’s hard to find a provider that accepts State healthcare and outside of the encounter with the first woman dentist, it would be fine. However if you have medical anxiety or a fear of dentists, you may consider elsewhere or being careful which provider does your work at Access Dental Olympia. Also - it feels dishonest to offer incentives for google reviews, as well as messaging your clients using your customer outreach platform to request a review.

Today was my first time visiting Access Dental. Overall it was a pleasant experience especially my dental hygienist, Jennifer. She was very personable and quick in her duties. She moved very quickly between stations. 🦷 In terms of improvement, I would suggest the staff drop the “rap” music and put on something more soothing and generally appealing such as jazz or classical music.

I’ve been a patient for over a decade, the environment and care have only improved over the years. Today, I went in for two cavities and from the moment I walked in I was greeted with kindness and my questions were addressed. The experience was pain free and the dentist was very informative and professional, as was the dental assistant. The staff is always very nice.

The office is always clean and inviting. My treatment plan is almost completed, but I will continue to come to this office when needed.
