Dr. Sherry Maz speaks kindly to her patients, but I want to warn others: do your research before booking an appointment. She misrepresented her network status, leading to an expensive and stressful experience. In December, I was looking for an in-network dentist after my trusted out-of-network provider quoted me $2,100 for a crown, with insurance covering $1,100 (my out of pocket $1,000). When I called, I told her that $1000 out of pocket was too much for me at this time and Dr. Maz assured me she accepted my insurance on the phone but failed to disclose that she was actually out of network. She even texted me saying the procedure would cost much less than $1,100. Trusting this, I scheduled an appointment. At the end of my visit, I was blindsided with a $2,750 bill—far higher than my previous out-of-network provider.

I was in shock and in tears. At my next visit, a technician confided in me that multiple patients had complained about excessive fees and that staff were reprimanded for admitting the practice was out of network. During my visit to have the crown placed, I witnessed another patient push back on a charge that had more than doubled from the previous year. The dentist simply smiled and said, “Well, that was last year. ” The prices and costs are not explained to anyone upfront. They rush you into the room and share extraordinary fees later. On top of this, Dr. Maz repeatedly texted me that they would charge my credit card on file and I would pre-pay before my crown was completed—something I have never experienced at any dental office. At the office, when I wrote on the payment consent form that I wanted to be present for any charge and do not authorize to charge without my consent, she refused to finish my crown until I signed a consent form allowing her to bill me if insurance didn’t pay the amount she wanted.

In the end, where I would have paid $1,000 with my long-time dentist, I ended up paying $1,500 out of pocket—all because I was misled into thinking this was an in-network provider. Final advice: Always ask for a cost breakdown in writing before treatment. Don’t let small talk and friendliness distract you from getting clear answers about pricing. Based on my experience, this office is not transparent, and their fees are significantly higher than even other out-of-network providers. Beware. I am considering reporting this incident to the Better Business Bureau, my insurance company, and the state board of dentistry. I encourage others to check their bills carefully or share their own experiences.
