Detailed Introduction

Aspen Dental is a prominent American dental support organization (DSO) that provides comprehensive business and administrative services to a vast network of independently owned and operated dental practices across the United States. Founded in 1998 by Bob Fontana in New York, the organization's core mission is to improve access to quality dental care by addressing common barriers such as affordability, transparency, and geographical limitations. History and Growth: Aspen Dental originated from a merger in 1998 between East Coast Dental, founded by Robert Fontana, and Upstate Dental. By 2000, it had expanded to 33 locations across several Northeastern states. Significant growth followed, fueled by strategic investments from private equity firms, including Ares Management and Leonard Green & Partners. In 2004, Aspen Dental launched its Practice Ownership Program (POP), empowering dentists to become practice owners while receiving non-clinical support. This program has been a cornerstone of its expansion, with the number of practice owners within the Aspen Dental network more than doubling in the last decade. In 2018, the corporate headquarters relocated from Syracuse, New York, to Chicago, Illinois. By 2021, Aspen Dental Management, Inc. rebranded its parent company as The Aspen Group (TAG), signifying its expansion beyond dental care into other healthcare sectors like urgent care, medical aesthetics (Chapter Aesthetic Studio), and veterinary care (Lovet Pet Health Care). Today, TAG supports over 1,300 health and wellness offices across 46 states, serving millions of patients annually. Services and Patient Focus: Aspen Dental-supported practices offer a wide range of dental services, including: General Dentistry: Routine check-ups, cleanings, fillings, and preventative care. Emergency Dental Care: Prompt appointments for toothaches, broken teeth, knocked-out teeth, and other urgent dental issues. Restorative Dentistry: Dentures (including immediate and implant-supported options), dental implants, crowns, and bridges. Cosmetic Dentistry: Teeth whitening, veneers, and clear aligners (including their proprietary Motto® brand). Oral Surgery: Including tooth extractions and wisdom tooth removal. Periodontal Disease Treatment: For gum health concerns. A key aspect of Aspen Dental's approach is its focus on patient accessibility and affordability. They often locate practices in "dental deserts" or areas with underserved populations. They strive to make care accessible through flexible scheduling, including walk-in and same-day emergency appointments, and offer various financing options, including third-party lenders, CareCredit, Afterpay, and their own Aspen Dental Savings Plan. Operational Model: Aspen Dental operates as a Dental Support Organization (DSO). This means that while individual Aspen Dental practices are independently owned and operated by licensed dentists, Aspen Dental (or its parent company, TAG) provides a comprehensive suite of non-clinical business support services. These services include: Accounting and bookkeeping Advertising and marketing Human resources and personnel recruiting Payroll administration Regulatory compliance Procurement of equipment and supplies Real estate management and leasing Installation of patient interface platforms Dental laboratory services for manufacturing prosthetics This model allows dentists to concentrate primarily on patient care while the business and administrative aspects are handled by the support organization. Community Engagement and Mission: Aspen Dental is committed to giving back to the community. Their "Healthy Mouth Movement" offers free dental care, particularly to veterans and underserved individuals. They aim to break down barriers to care and improve people's lives through better oral health. Their core values emphasize compassion, respect, and providing a judgment-free environment for patients.

The office so called “manager” is very rude. His customer service skills are lacking the aspects of courtesy and respect. I was angry because they have wasted my time with their unprofessionalism; as I had to call few times to give them my info and still they do not have it down correctly.

Nevertheless as I started looking at their bad reviews after this incident I was alarmed not to set a foot there. Of course they also have some good reviews but the way to find out the truth, read the reviews of unsatisfied customers… and run the other way.

Awesome experience as this was my first visit. The facility is new, clean, and has the state of the art technology. I was impressed with how detailed and friendly the staff were. Special shout out to the dental assistant, I believe her name was Latoya. She was amazing!! I may be switching Dentists now as Aspen Dental won me over!

I had no intention of writing a review. However, I got an email from Aspen Dental asking for one. . . so, this is on you guys. I went to AD asking for a checkup and cleaning. I should have known something was up when no one ever used the word "cleaning" or approached the topic. And more than once during the visit, I was told my visit would include not only a hygienist and dentist, but a finance office visit. I am used to a trip to the finance office when I buy a car, but not to visit a dentist. . . Here is what I am used to at every dentist I have visited for over a half century: Make appointment for an initial visit, get teeth cleaned, x-rayed, and have a dentist tell me I am doing well (or fix something that is obviously in need of fixing). I had a hygienist tell me of some dental issues needing a deep clean beneath a couple teeth (related to POTENTIAL bone disease… they even had a legal paper saying this was theoretical in nature) and recommend a multi month treatment that I could discuss in the finance office.

The dentist came in for a couple of minutes and said things looked good. So. . . off I am shuffled to the finance office (the guy even came into the room to escort me there). The private office has lots of brochures on deferred payment plans. This is new to me. . . none of my teeth were cleaned at this office. . . kind of the thing I wanted.

The finance guy came up with $1000+ deep cleaning program (which was a few hundred with my network insurance). I FEEL this place would take a person with the finest set of choppers and find something that requires a trip to the finance office. So. . . here is your requested review. . . while the people are nice, the business practice of Aspen Dental (in MY opinion and at THEIR request) is shadier than a used car dealership from Florida. Two stars since the people were nice and the sales pressure was very low. Dinged for not doing a cleaning and assuming a trip to the finance office was part of any initial visit and not letting me know before my visit that used one of my dentist visits for the year that insurance covers.

ROMAN the Office Manager is AMAZING!! He EXPLAINED my dental treatment plan in great detail with financing, and is extremely considerate and helpful. Very knowledgeable in finance options. DR. PARK IS THE BEST EVER, he is very kind and caring. Because of Roman, and the ENTIRE STAFF my family will now be seeing Aspen Dental for all their dental needs!
