Dentist in Ajax, ON
Just one week after I quit a job with benefits, i broke a tooth. My usual dentist was at a swanky downtown Toronto practice near where i had been working, so I decided that without benefits, i'd be better off finding a more modest local dentist. I looked on line and found Dr. Benyovits and booked an appointment. Dr. Benyovit examined my teeth and the X-Rays that they took and said that the tooth was dying and that i needed a root canal. He went into great detail about the tooth and how it had come to die and told me it would continue to deteriorate if I didn't take action, it was a long intricate story that anyone who didn't know their own mouth could easily have believed. He said he would do his best to keep the fees down since I didn't have benefits and it wouldn't be any more than $4,000-5,000 !!!!! The problem with this diagnosis was that I knew exactly what had happened to my tooth. You see some months previous to my tooth breaking, I had a wisdom tooth extracted, which in turn meant that my teeth had a little more space and as one would expect, the teeth moved slightly since they weren't as confined anymore. This meant that this slight change in position caused the upper and lower teeth to meet with different pressure points than before. The broken tooth was a result of this change in pressure points to a tooth that was already weakened by a filling.
There was no pain and the broken tooth wasn't causing any problems other than being a bit of a trap for food particles. In my opinion, and i'm not a dentist, all i needed was for the tiny piece of tooth that broke off to be replaced by some kind of filling. I decided it was time to visit my swanky downtown dentist and get a second opinion. I didn't tell him anything about my first opinion from Dr. Benyovits, i wanted him to draw his own conclusion and after looking at my tooth without taking any new X Rays, he told me exactly what i had suspected. He repaired the tooth with a natural coloured filling, it took all of 10 minutes, he did such a good job that you can't tell that the tooth was ever damaged; cost to me $125! I have to take this opportunity to warn each of you as a consumer of health care services. There are a lot of dentists out there who will prescribe treatments that aren't necessary,. The treatments won't harm you, but they will unnecessarily inconvenience you and more importantly; make a lot of money for the dentist. My swanky downtown dentist warned me about this the first time I went to see him over 12 years ago. He has never suggested replacing my childhood fillings because they're old (one of the most common scams)- he always checks them to make sure they're still viable and he has never had to replace any of them or do any work that wasn't necessary. I trust him.
I have on occasion had to see other dentists in the same swanky practice who have suggested replacing my fillings, but to this date, a second opinion from Dr. Andrew Platis has always confirmed that it's not necessary. On leaving Dr. Benyovits offices as I paid my bill, I noticed that the office staff weren't comfortable - they had cheap office chairs and the reception set up wasn't right for the work they were doing. I am an ergonomic consultant, so i gave them a quick consultation and told them how to make their work space more comfortable without having to spend any money, it was obvious to me that their employer had 'cheaped' out on their comfort. For most of us, we take these recommendations at face value, we go along with what's advised, but Dr. Benyovits never asked me anything about my dental history and I didn't offer it. I wanted to make sure he was authentic. In my opinion he either doesn't have the experience of the many factors that can cause a tooth to break or he saw an opportunity to gouge an innocent customer. So, if you go to a dental office that isn't swanky it could just mean that the dentist would rather pocket all the profits instead of making a comfortable environment for the patients and staff,

I have literally been going here since before I had teeth. My family moved 2 hours away from the area and we ALWAYS went back. Now I'm an adult, with my own husband and soon to have children and I can say with confidence that we will be going there forever!! Distance doesn't matter when you travel to see family.

I have always hated going to dentists but I can say I had a genuinely pleasant experience here. Dr. Chung was absolutely amazing. I don't have insurance and he was really great at letting me know everything he was doing and was super accommodating. I had to have a fairly difficult procedure done and Dr.
Chan was talking to me every step of the way, letting me know exactly what was going on and somehow I did not feel a THING. The receptionist were also very sweet and helpful. Absolutely recommend this clinic.
