My visit to Dr Samera Mumtaz dental office has always been an absolutely wonderful experience. All the staff members are such wonderful people. They have great personalities and very courteous, even when you are running late to the appointment…lol.

Two months ago (April 2025) Dr. Mumtaz sold the practice to Dr. Tran. This wasn't revealed to me until after my appointment. My 6 month visit was routine. I have been going to Dr. Brookline Dental for years. The dental hygienists in the past have always been cheerful and pleasant, but not this time. The hygienist that did the cleaning was gruff to the point of rudeness, but whatever. She did a thorough job on the cleaning, so no complaints about the actual dental work. I expected Dr. Mumtaz to drop in after the cleaning as usual, but of course it was Dr. Tran.

I thought maybe she was new, or a substitute while Dr. Mumtaz was away. Dr. Tran poked around my teeth and gums, looked at my x-rays of six months ago. Again, no complaints about the dental work, such that it was. Returning to the front desk after my appointment I was told my dental plan is "out of network" and I'd have to pay for the appointment. I was a bit confused as it had never been a problem before, that they had been an in-network provider. Only then did they inform me that Dr. Tran acquired the practice from Dr. Mumtaz, and that she had decided not to accept my dental plan. I can't say why, but I got the impression from the two at the front desk that this was a familiar exchange. I asked, "Why wasn't I informed of this BEFORE my appointment?" "I was told letters to patients went out," was the reply. No letter was received by me.

Perhaps I missed it, but when I shared this experience with another patient who has a pending appointment, she confirmed that she had not received any such letter, either. Can you imagine if I needed more work than just a cleaning? The bill for just the cleaning was now over $200 which is on the high end for this area. So to recap the reasons for my two-star review in no particular order: 1. Rude hygienist 2. (Intentional?) Lack of communication regarding changes 3. Higher cost of services I will probably be looking for a new dentist in the interim 6 months as this experience has left a bad taste in my mouth (pun intended). Besides, my plan is no longer accepted here. P. S. The only clue that the practice changed hands was the name of the dentist on the bottom of the sign out front (see photo). The practice name and everything else looks the same.
