Detailed Introduction

Dear Tooth Fairy: Pediatric Dentistry of Jersey City is a specialized dental clinic dedicated to the oral health of children. The clinic's primary focus is on creating a welcoming and comfortable environment to help children feel at ease and build a positive association with dental care. The practice is led by board-certified pediatric dentists, like Dr. Minjin Kim, who have undergone extensive training in child psychology and specialized techniques for treating young patients. The clinic provides a comprehensive suite of services tailored to the unique needs of infants, children, and adolescents, as well as patients with special needs. These services include preventive care such as routine check-ups, cleanings, fluoride treatments, and dental sealants. For restorative needs, they offer metal-free fillings, crowns, and extractions. The clinic also specializes in non-invasive techniques to treat decay without drilling, such as Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF), ICON, and Hall crowns. In addition to pediatric services, the clinic has a general dentist, Dr. Youngin Son, who provides care for adults, making it a convenient option for the whole family. They also have an orthodontist, Dr. Richard Song, who offers braces and aligners for children and teens. The clinic's approach is designed to reduce patient anxiety. They use a "Tell-Show-Do" technique, have TVs on the ceiling for distraction, and offer various rewards like prizes and a "No Cavity Club" to reinforce positive behavior. For more anxious patients or those with extensive dental work, they provide sedation options, including laughing gas and in-office IV sedation. Dear Tooth Fairy is conveniently located in the Old Colony Square shopping plaza in Downtown Jersey City, with free parking available. They accept most major PPO insurance plans but do not work with Medicaid or HMO plans. The clinic also offers a membership plan for patients without dental insurance.

Great experience; treated me great and attended to my teeth with much sensitivity and care. Very knowledgeable staff! They treat both my daughter and I and we are both happy campers! My daughter is 8 and she loved it here she also gets a little token each time she comes and leaves with a treat. I would recommend to anyone who can come and to the entire family!

My experience was extremely disappointing. Dr. Kim insisted that an x-ray was necessary, despite official guidelines stating that it might not be required. This was our first visit (and last), and they refused to see my child because I questioned the need for an x-ray at this initial appointment. Dr. Kim's approach was unprofessional and created a very negative experience.

I am shocked and disturbed that a pediatric doctor would behave this way. This is not the standard of care one expects from a pediatrician. Dr. Kim told me that I should find somewhere else to go.

This was by far, the most upsetting appointment I’ve experienced for my 6 year old autistic son!! Initially, I called and made the appointment for a consultation after being referred by another dentist because my son needed filings and needs proper treatment because of his condition. I filled out the new intake paper work that was emailed to me, and was very pleased at first. I walked in. Again feeling comfortable because it is definitely a child friendly environment.

Once being taken in, I was then promoted to go into the Xray room which was by far the BEST part of my sons experience. The xray tech was VERY friendly and VERY PROFESSIONAL! she was patient and communicative and my son was very comfortable! (Thank you so much) he did his front pictures and not the side ones. After being told to delete my video (I was on face time with dad because he was working and also wanted to see how our child did in his first visit) I was then told to go to the exam room. The dentist sat with us and after TEN SECONDS of trying to put the little mirror thing in his mouth she stood up and said, “sedation” and walked out! (I’ve never been so upset) I wasn’t given an explanation as to our next steps, however was given a treatment plan for the “next visit” !! Was then told by the front receptionist that in order to book the visit, I had to pay $250 (that was NOT applied to any treatment and was non refundable) Ofcourse being confused as to why to even book further treatment was going to cost $250, but was also told that the dental work ($700) and anesthesia to have him sedated ($2500) will have to be paid up front before any work will be done.

Not only that, but to send what I paid to the insurance to “see” if I get reimbursed! NO payment plan or anything! Just MONEY! Now granted, I am not oblivious to the high cost of dental work and/or other medical procedures, but I do work with insurances on a daily basis for 10+ years, and understand that certain things need to be pre certed to the insurance companies for approval (with proper documentation and reports) before procedures are done. This is UNACCEPTABLE!!! After reiterating what I just heard and trying to clarify with the receptionist, I was told, “yup”. 😂 Thank you My Tooth Fairy for a visit that I will assure will never happen again! I have reached out to a number of people and will make sure that this is looked into! (Again, thank to the xray tech 💕)

Dr Kim is so unpleasant towards kids and parents alike, she has zero patience working with children - pushes for sedation the second she has trouble getting a child to cooperate- looks like this is a common issue most parents face at this practice. She’s the dentist that’s going to make your child hate going to the dentist for life. Not a comfortable visit at all.
