The clinic emphasizes a patient-centered approach, aiming to make each visit smooth and stress-free. For first-time visitors, they recommend allowing 45 minutes to an hour for the appointment. The office is nestled between North Glebe Road and Old Dominion Drive, with parking accessible only via Old Dominion Drive. The practice maintains a strong focus on infection control and has implemented additional measures, including social distancing and limited accompaniment for patients, to ensure safety, especially during public health concerns. Dr. Nelson and his team are caring, skilled professionals! They are thorough and they explain exactly what’s going on with each patient. This takes time. My children have seen him since they were 2 and will continue. This was validated by seeing a different dentist last year (due to insurance changes). That visit was faster but they wouldn’t let me sit with the kids and the dentist never talked to me.

Instead I received a paper with a recommendation to pull teeth (for both kids) and fillings for cavities in baby-teeth (?!) with a requirement to pay half in that moment. I couldn’t ask questions or get an explanation. But it was a fast appointment. I paid out of pocket to have Dr. Nelson complete a second opinion and uncovered NONE of that work was necessary. He showed me the X-rays and helped me understand options we had for treatment.

The other dentist was focused on “quick” fixes that allow more charges to my insurance and out of pocket deductibles. So yes, if you don’t really care if your dentist is doing right by your child, go elsewhere. I’m glad there’s a dentist that will take the time to explain what’s going on and options for treatment.

I am an adult now, but I went to Dr. Nelson starting in fourth grade and I will say I have not had a single dental experience be as pleasant in my life. I think they set the bar too high and I’m disappointed by almost every other office I’ve visited as an adult. I even went back as an adult for a question about a permanent retainer and everyone is just as nice as ever.

Our kids have gone to Dr. Nelson for 10 years. He is a great dentist with years of experience and always exams them closely after a cleaning, then explains any issues clearly to us. Our kids have special needs. The staff is great, accommodating to their needs, kind, and our kids have no dental fears as a result.

Our daughter who has cerebral palsy needed a special device due to her teeth being too crowded. Even though she pulled it out several times, Dr. Nelson saw her back quickly and got it re-installed and adapted it so that she would tolerate it better. We sometimes have to wait when we get to the office, but usually no more than 10-20 minutes - this is no different than any other doctor's office I have ever been to.

Dental care is very good, they explain everything, don't do unnecessary procedures and are willing to change their prognosis if they realize their initial assessment was off. but it's very very busy. Some nurses are better than others, more knowledgeable and with better bedside manners especially with kids.

So you may want to schedule ahead of time or wait longer to get the nurse your kid is most comfortable with.
