Detailed Introduction

Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, located at 1900 South Ave, La Crosse, WI, is the flagship medical center of the broader Gundersen Health System. Established with deep roots dating back to 1891 when Norwegian-born surgeon Adolf Gundersen, MD, opened his practice, and serving as the first medical director of Lutheran Hospital when it opened in 1902, the institution has grown significantly. In 1995, the clinic and hospital officially merged to form Gundersen Lutheran, Inc., and later became Gundersen Health System in 2013. The system, which united with Bellin Health Systems in 2022, now encompasses 11 hospitals and over 100 local clinics across Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Upper Michigan. Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse is a comprehensive facility equipped with 327 beds and offers a vast range of medical services. These include, but are not limited to, urgent and emergency care, imaging, in-patient and out-patient surgery, and a full obstetrics unit. The medical center provides extensive specialty care across numerous disciplines such as cardiology, oncology, neurosciences, orthopedics, pediatrics, behavioral health, rehabilitation, and various surgical specialties. It also integrates essential services like pharmacy, lab services, and diagnostic testing. The patient care philosophy at Gundersen is deeply rooted in "Love + Medicine," emphasizing patient and family-centered care delivered with consideration, dignity, respect, and an appreciation for individual beliefs and values. Nurses are guided by the "Caritas" principle from Dr. Jean Watson's Human Caring Theory, focusing on being fully present with patients and practicing loving kindness. Patients are actively involved in their care decisions and have rights to high-quality care, privacy, and feedback mechanisms. Beyond direct patient care, Gundersen Health System demonstrates strong community involvement through the Gundersen Medical Foundation and Gundersen Partners. The Medical Foundation, established by Adolf Gundersen's sons, supports medical education, research, and philanthropic endeavors, including clinical trials and training for future healthcare professionals. Gundersen Partners, a member-based group, provides support through service and fundraising, offering scholarships and sponsoring events like the "Steppin' Out in Pink" breast cancer walk. The system prioritizes community contributions that address identified health needs, promote wellness, and support civic and economic development in the region.

While the nursing staff was kind and attentive, my overall experience with the physician at this hospital was disappointing. I came in with flu-like symptoms and was diagnosed without any testing—no nasal swab, no bloodwork, nothing. I requested an antibiotic but was told it couldn’t be prescribed without identifying the virus, yet no effort was made to determine what I was dealing with.

Two weeks later, my primary care physician diagnosed me with a severe sinus and ear infection—issues that were completely overlooked during my hospital visit. The hospital doctor examined my ear and said there was no infection, but my PCP found significant swelling and redness. Thankfully, the antibiotic my PCP prescribed is now helping relieve the symptoms I’ve been dealing with since that visit, where I was sent home with only nausea medication, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen.

I can’t help but feel that this dismissive treatment may have been tied to my racial background, especially considering I do have insurance. It’s troubling to think that proper care might have been withheld due to bias, and it’s something I hope this facility takes seriously moving forward

Would love to be able to give this money hungry hospital a zero Stars if I could my partner went into Gundersen er for a bad cough when she told the ER person at the check in she didn't feel right like she was on drugs even though I knew she wasn't they laughed at her then when we got her name called to get the nurse Megan was her name my partner started having a non epileptic seizure witch doesn't seem like a real seizure but she had been diagnosed by a real doctor for it The nurse treated her like she was faking it she kept telling her to stand up to lay on the gurny Even though she was told she could not stand if staff do not like their job, they need to do something else for a job when she was getting discharged she told the doctor she couldn't walk on her own without a wheelchair And she didn't have a ride instead of understanding and caring about her safety.

They told her she needed to leave where they would call the police and he had three security guards come in to the room her sister was on the phone the whole time she heard everything that was said is this how hospitals now are where when you call them out on what they're doing wrong to you they use intimidation and threats to get what they want because they don't want to deal with you anymore And because they're butt hurt about the truth God damn.

If I'm dying I'll probably just not even go to the hospital if I'm going to get treated like that hospitals Care more about money than actually Patients anymore pretty sad

I’ve received nothing but wonderful care here. Dr. Jacobson is a fantastic doctor, she is patient, understanding, kind, and thorough with her explanations. I always feel better leaving. Dr.

Vircks and her team provided assistance through a horrific incident with compassion and generosity. The entire OB team has performed with excellence and I will forever be grateful for their tender care. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I had surgery there recently and the entire staff was amazing. The anesthesiologist and the doctor sat down with us and were thorough with explaining what to expect and answered all our questions. The nursing staff was wonderful.

My daughter waited for me in the lobby throughout the surgery and she said that everyone out there was very friendly and helpful. The staff made this experience easy and comfortable.
