Detailed Introduction

InterCare Community Health Network is a prominent non-profit organization dedicated to providing comprehensive, patient-centered primary health care across Southwest Michigan. Founded in 1972, its roots lie in serving migrant and seasonal agricultural farmworkers in Berrien, Van Buren, and Cass Counties. Over the decades, it expanded its scope to include rural residents and urban areas, reflecting its commitment to addressing the diverse healthcare needs of its communities. As a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), InterCare is committed to increasing access for the underserved and reducing health disparities. They offer a wide array of services, including primary medical care (wellness, prevention, acute care, chronic disease management), dental services (cleanings and treatment), mental health counseling, psychiatric evaluations, and substance use disorder treatment. Specialized programs include obstetrics, pediatrics, women's health, and school-based health centers. They also operate one of the largest WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) programs in Michigan and utilize mobile medical and dental units to reach more patients. A core philosophy of InterCare is that all people have the right to equal access to quality healthcare. This is demonstrated through their acceptance of all insurances, including Medicaid, and their sliding fee scale for those without insurance, ensuring no one is denied services due to inability to pay. They pride themselves on a collaborative care model, with teams of doctors, advanced practice professionals, nurses, care managers, and mental health staff working together to coordinate all aspects of patient care. InterCare also provides support with transportation, follow-ups after hospital visits, and assistance with obtaining health insurance coverage, recognizing that health is influenced by various life factors. The organization's mission is to improve community health, with a vision to increase access for the underserved and reduce health disparities. They celebrate diversity and strive to create a respectful, diverse workplace that ultimately leads to high-quality care for all patients. InterCare's long-standing history and expansion from its grassroots beginnings highlight its resilience and its evolution into a vital player in the healthcare landscape of Southwest Michigan, serving approximately 50,000 patients annually.

The wait times aren’t long anymore but medical assistants there still seem like the life was sucked out of them. I know everyone is fighting their own demons but that shouldn’t be affecting you work performance. The lady who schedules appointments (this was around 9/2022) sounds dead (no kindness in her voice). When I was scheduling my appointment I let the the lady know my 2 concerns. When I showed up for my appointment the medical assistant only mentioned 1 concern I had.

I let them know my other concern and they dismissed it. When Jon Gibson, DNP came in the room I made my concern simple and short. He started mumbling under his breath basically how my concern is dumb instead of reassuring or educating me that I was incorrect for my concern. I decided not to bring up my second concern since I was no longer comfortable. When I asked him questions about the prescription he was recommending (like how often to use it and when I would see results) he would say an answer and then say “wait ummm uhh never mind” and then he got up and said “I’ll be back”.

I waited a couple minutes and he sent his medical assistant to tell me my appointment was over. Ashamed how my insurance, Medicaid, has to pay caregivers like this. If Intercare didn’t have time to address my 2 concerns then they could have let me know to make a separate appointment or made a longer appointment for me. Please do better.

I went to James Street in Holland to get a tooth out, but was turned away. I called Pullman intercare and they got me in right away. Dr. Carmen told me what was going to happen next..I never thought I'd be comfortable at a dentist. The receptionist is great also.❤️thank you for the coffee...I recommend them for fast, friendly service.. thank you!!

I can't speak on any of the doctors but I certainly feel dr Carmen deserves more than 5 stars! For the past 10 years any time I come here, she's who takes care of me. I can't speak highly enough about her, awesome work, and an all around great person. 10 out of 5 stars!
