Detailed Introduction

Loya Kids Dental, located at 134 W Vallette St, Elmhurst, IL 60126, is a specialized pediatric dental practice under the leadership of Dr. Flor D. Loya-Costabile. The brand name, while sometimes referred to as "Loya Pediatric Dentistry," consistently points to the same dedicated dental office focused on the oral health of infants, children, and adolescents. Dr. Flor D. Loya-Costabile is a highly experienced and credentialed pediatric dentist, holding a Diplomate status with the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. She is deeply rooted in the Elmhurst community, having grown up there and attended local schools before pursuing her extensive dental education. Dr. Loya-Costabile earned her Bachelor of Arts in Biology from The University of Chicago and her dental degree from the University of Michigan Dental School in 1990. She further specialized by completing a General Practice Residency with an emphasis on Pediatric Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics in 1991. Loya Kids Dental prides itself on being a "pediatric dental home" for families in Elmhurst and surrounding areas. This means providing a continuum of comprehensive dental care, from a child's first dental visit (recommended within six months of the eruption of their first tooth) through their teenage years. The practice emphasizes preventive care, understanding that primary ("baby") teeth are crucial for proper chewing, speech development, maintaining space for permanent teeth, and overall jaw development. A key philosophy of Loya Kids Dental is the active involvement of parents in their child's dental journey. Unlike some practices where parents may wait in the reception area, Dr. Loya-Costabile ensures parents are always included in the exam room. This approach facilitates parental education on good oral hygiene habits, allowing them to reinforce these practices at home. The office also employs child psychology and behavior management techniques, both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic, to create a positive and stress-free environment for young patients, particularly those who may be apprehensive about dental appointments. Services offered at Loya Kids Dental likely include routine cleanings and exams, fluoride treatments, sealants, cavity fillings, and addressing dental emergencies. The practice also assists families with fulfilling Illinois State dental form requirements for children entering kindergarten, second, or sixth grade. Dr. Loya-Costabile's commitment extends to providing personalized care, adapting her approach to the unique needs and personalities of each child to ensure comfortable and positive dental experiences.

At check in unprofessional and unethical staff asked me to sign HIPPA consent form without providing HIPPA disclosure. When I asked for the form to be provided before signing, they had trouble locating it, signaling to me this is common practice. That was my first red flag. Train your staff. Got worse when my nervous 5 year was being examined by Dr Loya who kept her hands jammed in her mouth despite my daughter squirming and crying out in discomfort and pain.

(Dr later blamed HER for this incident). Dr explained to me that kids can get out of things they don’t want to do at home by crying (no? Very presumptuous) and that things would work differently here. In her view this entitled her to physically restrain my daughter while asking her repeatedly and aggressively why she was crying. I had to request MULTIPLE times for Dr to remove her hands from my daughter and back off. I was nearly shouting before she relented.

Dr was willing to violate my daughter’s autonomy and ignored multiple attempts at direct parental intervention before she released my daughter. Violation of core medical ethical principles. She physically and emotionally endangered my child I will never return and advise other parents to be extremely cautious about bringing your children to this practice.

I can't say enough about Dr Loya! One of a few female pediatric dentists that will sing to your kids in English or Spanish while examining their teeth. My kids have been seeing her since they were babies (& only spoke Spanish then). My kids feel at home and relaxed. She is very gentle and thorough. My three children absolutely love Dr Loya and look forward to their appointments. My insurance changed and won't cover as much but my kids don't want to switch!. They are so happy with her and that is worth the extra to me.

. . It's a peace of mind. My experience with dentists as a kid was HORRIBLE!. To this day I can't stand going to the dentist; I get so nervous and start to sweat!. I will avoid them as much as possible! I don't want my kids to ever feel this way; it should be a pleasant experience. My only semi-complaint is that the sensory overload with so many electronics but I must also confess that my kids look forward to picking their own movie.

Also, the background noise helps calm & distract them if they are having painful work done. Dr Loya takes the time to explain what every tool is, how it will be used and let's them feel & see how the tool performs (on their arm) so they know exactly what to expect in the mouth. Dr Loya is a true gem! Her staff is just as friendly and helpful. Her office is super clean and kid friendly. We've NEVER had to wait to be seen for an appointment more than ten minutes. Usually, we don't wait at all & I take my three kids in at once! Some assistants to a slightly better or cleaner job on the cleanings but overall, they all do a great job. Happy kids, Happy mom!

I'm so lucky to have found Dr. Loya as our pediatric dentist. My daughter developed a tooth abscess three years ago. I called three different pediatric dentists and no one answered the phone until I called Dr. Loya's office. I feel that her office staff are always good at answering the phone and returning calls.

I wasn't able to get a same day appointment but it was close enough so I booked it plus I didn't think I would have enough luck to find another dentist office that will actually answer the phone. I did go to our pediatrician for an emergency appointment who prescribed us antibiotics. When we did go to Dr. Loya, we were already on the antibiotics for a few days and she noticed that there hasn't been improvement and she's not able to extract the tooth herself because my daughter is not able to open her mouth big enough so Dr. Loya talked to our pediatrician and had our pediatrician make a referral to have us go to the pediatric emergency room for treatment. So I'm very thankful for her convincing our pediatrician that emergency measures were needed.

Since then, I've been taking my kids to her regularly. Dr. Loya and her staff are great and my kids feel very comfortable with them. We're very lucky to have found her practice.

Dr. Loya seems like a good dentist in the few times we have been. The frustration I have is there is no online appointment system and every time I call for appointment they book months out at inconvenient times that require me to leave work.

I called recently because my daughter has a terrible cavity and is in pain and requested to be seen as soon as possible and there was no urgency to get us into see our doctor in months and no calls for cancellation in the weeks we have been waiting. By comparison, if I had an urgent need my pediatrician will always make time so why is this so different and difficult? Are there too many patients per doctor?
