Established with a rich heritage tracing back to the Sisters of Mercy in 1874, the institution is deeply committed to providing high-quality, compassionate healthcare with a strong emphasis on community service, particularly for the poor, underserved, and vulnerable. As a comprehensive medical center, Mercy offers an extensive range of primary and specialty care services through its main campus and various community physician sites across the Baltimore metropolitan region. It is home to numerous "Centers of Excellence," including the Cancer Institute, Digestive Health & Liver Disease Institute, Orthopedics, Primary Care (Mercy Personal Physicians), and Women's Health & Medicine. Other specialized services encompass cardiovascular care, emergency services, joint replacement, spine surgery, hemodialysis, obstetrics, intensive care, and robotic surgery. Mercy Medical Center is a 183-bed facility (with some sources citing slightly different bed counts, e.g., 178 or 215 inpatient beds) with a significant patient volume, including thousands of inpatient and observation cases annually, surgical cases, and emergency room visits. It is notably the largest birthing hospital in Baltimore City. The hospital is recognized for its clinical excellence and patient experience. It has received accolades such as an "A" Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a 5-Star Overall Hospital Rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and Magnet Recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. U.S. News & World Report has also acknowledged Mercy among the "Best Hospitals," rating it as "High Performing" in Orthopedics. Mercy's commitment extends beyond medical treatment to encompass the holistic well-being of its patients, including physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. The institution embraces innovation, utilizing advanced technology like robotic-assisted surgery and providing patient-friendly amenities such as private rooms, interactive multi-media systems, and interpreter services. It also houses medical education programs, with affiliations like the Internal Medicine Pediatrics Residency program with the University of Maryland Medical Center. The core values of dignity, excellence, justice, service, and stewardship guide its operations, reflecting its mission to extend the healing power of compassionate care.

I love Mercy! All the health providers there are really nice & treat me very well. Wait time is perfect! I never wait long. After all I’m there to receive the best care & that’s what I get every time. Also, I delivered both my babies at Mercy & was cared for through out my pregnancies. What an amazing team!

Doctors here are good for the most part but one of them told my bf while he was there for a 3 day detox that he would NOT stay clean if he didn’t go to rehab. He went in September of 2024 and has been clean ever since and never went to rehab. He came back home and has been working and only smoking weed ever since. Don’t ever tell your patients what they will and won’t or can’t do.

I had a major surgery and spent three overnights at Mercy Medical Center in May 2025. The procedure was successful, the care was excellent, and the food was amazingly tasty. All staff were friendly and helpful. My room on the 14th floor was kept clean and my needs were met. Of course, I had to wait at times, but I was not the only patient on the surgical floor, so I understand that. My husband spent the three nights with me. I would always recommend having someone stay in your room to help you with the little things and keep you company.

As excellent as the staff here was, they cannot be everywhere at once. The only slightly annoying incident was when I was checked out and ready to leave. . . and had to wait for two hours on that day's particular nurse. Otherwise, my care was outstanding!
