Detailed Introduction

Open Door Health Center (ODHC) is a well-established non-profit community health center located in Mankato, Minnesota. It operates as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), meaning it receives federal funding to provide comprehensive primary healthcare services to underserved populations. The organization's mission is to advance access to quality, affordable, culturally appropriate, and patient-centered collaborative medical, dental, and behavioral health services for all people across Southern Minnesota. ODHC offers a wide range of integrated healthcare services, including primary medical care for all ages, comprehensive dental services (cleanings, exams, fillings, extractions, dentures, crowns, gum disease treatment), and behavioral health services (mental health assessments, individual, family, and couples therapy, play therapy, anxiety and depression screenings, substance abuse assessments, trauma-focused therapy, grief counseling, and psychiatric nurse practitioner services). They also provide essential support services such as insurance enrollment assistance through MNsure, onsite legal assistance in partnership with Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services, and community health worker support to address social determinants of health like food insecurity or housing issues. A key aspect of Open Door Health Center's model is its commitment to affordability and accessibility. They accept most private insurance plans, as well as MinnesotaCare and Medical Assistance (MA). For uninsured or underinsured individuals, a sliding fee discount system is available, with fees based on income and household size, ensuring that no one is turned away due to inability to pay. While they are not a free clinic, they strive to make care as affordable as possible and offer payment plans. Open Door Health Center has a rich history, evolving from a free health program in Mankato in the early 1990s and officially becoming Open Door Health Center in 1999. In 2009, it gained its FQHC designation, allowing for expanded services and funding. The center embraces a team-based approach, integrating various health services to provide holistic care. They also offer telehealth appointments for medical and behavioral health needs, enhancing convenience and accessibility for patients.

I've only had minimal interactions with Open Door but I cannot imagine I would ever want to deal with them again. We went to Dakota Child and Family Clinic (DCFC) that was merged with Open Door, which Open Door then shut down. There was no prior warning, we just one day got an email that Dakota was no more. Hundreds of clients and patients that couldn't get service anymore were left to fend for themselves. Our provider at Dakota was working tirelessly to get people prescriptions before Dakota closed.

One of our prescriptions was out of stock and had to be transferred to a new pharmacy, so we needed a new prescription. I called Open Door and they should've just been able to call in a new prescription for us. I was told that the Medical Director's new policy was that all Dakota patients had to be seen at Open Door in Mankato. DCFC is in Burnsville and we live in a northern Twin Cities suburb. We're not driving to Mankato just to get a prescription filled! This is all just a money grab from this Medical Director and is asinine.

It is a ridiculous way to treat patients who have already been through enough from their clinic closing. Do better.

Had some mental health issues over financial problems and was thinking I had depression. The phycologist then says that I'm just going through a rough patch and to take deep breaths and drink plenty of water. Also, that will be 450 dollars for a 50 min visit. Go to a different mental health clinic to which they say I have a BPD and need medication.

Do not go here they will take advantage of you. I had posted this review before and deleted it, but people need to know the truth.

Edited review: First appointment fell through, as some people read. I am here to update, as I believe in multiple chances. I am leaving Open Door with an improved rating, from 3 to 5. They called back before the year was up, and let me know they did have something available.

I met with the insurance navigator, she was kind and listened intently to what I was asking. She gave me all the information I needed to move forward with insurance options. This is great, and the kind of change I admire. It's truly nice to have a facility that many can go to without having to pay an arm and a leg!
