Detailed Introduction

The Peter Christensen Health Center (PCHC) is a comprehensive healthcare facility located in Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin. It serves the Lac du Flambeau Community, as well as the surrounding Vilas, Oneida, and Iron counties, providing care to both tribal members and non-tribal individuals. PCHC operates as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) and is accredited by AAAHC, signifying its commitment to high standards of care and continuous improvement. PCHC offers a wide array of services designed to provide integrated, patient-centered care. These include a robust family practice with physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician's assistants. Beyond primary medical care, the center provides vision services (including an optical retail component), a full-service pharmacy, laboratory testing, and advanced imaging such as radiology, MRI, and mammography. In addition to core medical offerings, PCHC emphasizes holistic health. It features chiropractic care, physical and occupational therapy, podiatry services, and comprehensive diabetes management programs. Behavioral Health Services are a significant component, with direct social work through clinic-based social workers and a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner offering medication assessments and management. The Family Resource Center (FRC) provides mental health services including psychological evaluations, individual, couples, and family psychotherapy, and addresses emotional issues like depression, grief, and anxiety. They also offer AODA (Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse) services, including assessments, counseling, intensive outpatient services, OWI services, and adolescent counseling. Community health is a key focus for PCHC, with programs such as diabetes management (accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators), collaboration with the Vilas County Public Health Department, and participation in the Northwoods Breastfeeding Coalition. They also have an Environmental Health Services department that focuses on public health and safety through inspections and programs like the Healthy Homes initiative. Historically, PCHC evolved from the Chippewa Health Center, established around 1976-1977 following the Indian Self-Determination Education & Assistance Act (ISDEAA, 1975). It moved to its current, modern facility in 2008. Its mission is "to be a leader in Excellence, meeting community members needs through coordinated, patient-centered, comprehensive health and wellness service that includes education, collaboration and patient sensitivity."

This clinic has great professionals. Having it helps the community very well. But, I was a victim of pure discrimination and racism. Not getting into many details, I will try to explain what happened to me. I was required by the tribal community employer to pass a TB test in order to stay employed at my job, in Lac Du Flambeau. So I was told by my supervisor to schedule a TB test. I scheduled the tb test with a couple of other co-workers (they are from other towns just like me) After a few months I received a bill of $240.

Non of my co-worker did though. When I went to express my concern regarding the matter, Venessa who worked at the payment desk was very rude to me and would not explain why I was charged so much money for a TB test. It costs $60 out of pocket if it’s done without an employer request and insurance. I had both. Venessa told me, that I have to pay because I’m not a tribal member and need to learn to speak better English. (I speak English very well, but I am a naturalized immigrant, so I do have an accent) I was put in a toxic situation and had to stand up for myself and bring up the laws of Wisconsin employment. The process was handled by me in a polite manner.

The clinic took down the charge and I didn’t have to pay, but they red flagged me after that. So, here’s my advise: don’t go there. I also suffered a horrible bacterial stomach infection at that time and was never properly diagnosed there. I had to go to a different clinic in order to receive quality care.

Horrible service. Triage nurses are never at the phone. Nearly impossible to book an appointment that doesn't hinder your entire day. They only call you back after at least an hour. Misdiagnosed by one primary care provider and one nurse at the same appointment.

Only when I got to see John was when I actually felt like I was being taken care of. He's been there since I was a kid and probably the only reliable person there. If you can, go anywhere else.

I have received very poor medical care from the provider I see. Provider will make you jump through hoops and improperly treat you before referring out to a proper specialist. Communication is practically nonexistent. They say they will follow-up with you but never will. You have to end up calling weeks later to see what’s going on.

The workers at the front and appointment desks look miserable and act like they are so inconvenienced that they have to help you. They will not notify you when an appointment is canceled. They’ll wait for you to show up and then tell you it is canceled. This place is should be ashamed at the lack of proper care they provide the community.

OPTICAL; All though my prescription sunglasses were rather late because the place the optical deals with we're having difficulties. Probably because I'm as blind as a bat lol. Their amazing employee Chelsea kept me informed as much as possible at work and outside of work. She cared for me more then just a patient. She was gone the day they came in but when I called I was told they weren't there.

So on top of the month I already waited what was another day huh. . I truly appreciated Chelsea more then ever!!! PCHC needs more of her around. .
