Currently I am on a very limited, low-income, with no dental insurance. I have been experiencing some new symptoms with my oral health and it’s been a number of years since I’ve had an exam, so with much anxiety I decided it was time. I was very intentional about my approach to finding a new dentist to see in the area. I called a number of offices and had a list of questions to ask about fees. When I called Saugeen Shores Family Dentist I was told a new patient dental exam was $200. I asked about the cost for x-rays (I would have inquired about the cost for the different types of x-rays) but was told that the x-rays were included with the exam fee. With this information I decided to proceed with a dental exam at Saugeen. I came for the appointment and when the Dr.

was reviewing the plan for the exam that included 3 different types of x-rays. I asked again if the price of a particular x-ray was included in the exam fee and was told yes. When I finished up and went to pay, the bill for a dental exam with x-rays was double what I was originally told. It turns out I was given wrong information and none of the x-rays were included in the exam fee. I fully understand the importance of a thorough dental exam (which is why I went), but I would have liked to make an informed choice with accurate information. I may have decided to proceed with all the different types of x-rays, or maybe we could have talked about the most important ones based on my concerns. Again, all about an informed choice. I think it is so important to provide accurate information about fees to potential patients when they inquire, so they can plan appropriately, especially when they’ve identified as having no insurance coverage.

Maybe this office is not used to dealing with people that are paying without insurance? The financial investment of dental work is very, very daunting and I believe leads to so many people not seeking the dental care they need. The dental team I saw today were all very nice. I felt confident that I received an excellent dental exam. My rating of 2 stars is based on the experience that I’ve shared here, not the dental expertise or quality of the dental exam/treatment plan. Staff at the clinic should be informed of the fee structure so patients have the opportunity to make decisions based on their individual circumstances. Especially people who are answering the phone and giving fee information to potential patients should definitely be in the know.

Visiting the dentist is such a pleasure from start to finish! I appreciate the text reminder of my appointment, easy parking, smiling desk staff, beautiful and sanitized individual glass pods, friendly and professional hygienists (thanks for asking if I could use some more whitening gel!) and knowledgeable dentist.

It was also very nice to view the tv set to a tour of Africa! My appointment was out of this world! Thanks everyone!
