Detailed Introduction

Sound Smiles Pediatric Dentistry is a dedicated pediatric dental clinic located in Burien, Washington, serving the communities of Burien, Seatac, and West Seattle. The clinic is spearheaded by Dr. Tyler Shawcroft, a highly experienced pediatric dentist with over 15 years in the field. Dr. Shawcroft earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Creighton University School of Dentistry, graduating Magna Cum Laude and receiving the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's Student Dentist Award. His interest in working with children led him to complete a residency in Pediatric Dentistry at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. The philosophy at Sound Smiles Pediatric Dentistry revolves around making dental visits enjoyable and educational for children, with the ultimate goal of preventing cavities and fostering lifelong positive oral health habits. They aim to create a comfortable and fun environment, often employing "Jedi Mind Tricks" to encourage kids to avoid sugar and maintain good brushing routines. Services offered at the clinic are comprehensive and tailored to children's unique needs, including routine cleanings and check-ups. For children who experience anxiety or require more extensive work, the clinic provides various sedation options such as Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas), conscious sedation, and general anesthesia (sleep dentistry), all administered in a safe and controlled environment by experienced anesthesiologists when necessary. Patients and parents consistently praise Sound Smiles Pediatric Dentistry for its friendly, patient, and professional staff. Testimonials frequently highlight the team's ability to make children feel at ease, even those with anxiety, and the overall positive experience from scheduling to treatment. Dr. Shawcroft himself is often commended for his gentle approach, ability to explain conditions clearly, and for creating a trustworthy environment. The clinic's commitment to personalized care and building trusting relationships ensures that children grow up feeling comfortable and confident about their dental health.

I have two young children and they both absolutely love Dr. Tyler. He has a special talent for working with kids and he seems completely at ease with them. They seem to trust him instinctively. We tried two other pediatric dentists and my daughter's reaction to them was lukewarm at best. She talks about Dr. Tyler fondly weeks after we've seen him.

Have been bringing my son here since he turned 1 (he is almost 4) and I have to say I am very happy with Dr. Tyler and his entire staff. We recently came in to have 1 cavity filled that we kept having to put off due to different reasons and from the last time my son was in for a checkup (summer 2020) until recently that 1 cavity got bigger going into the pulp of his baby tooth and even a second cavity formed on the baby tooth next to it, Dr. Tyler explained everything very well and let me know that because the cavity had extended down into the pulp of the tooth my son would need a silver crown instead of a filling like he originally planned for.

They were done before I knew it (so quick!) And my son had no idea what was going on. I highly recommend this office and will be bringing my youngest here for care when his time comes. Thank you Dr. Tyler & staff!

Dr. Tyler and his staff are amazing! Not only are they super friendly and calming, they are straight forward and explain everything before they do it. My son has been a bit afraid of the dentist, but because of Dr. Tyler and his staff, he rocked his check up and wants to go back. I appreciate how Dr. Tyler came and spoke with me before and after my son’s procedure.

He explained everything they were planning on doing and gave me possible scenarios. When the procedure was over, he came and explained everything he had done and why. Both of Dr. Tyler’s offices are child friendly and really suited for the kiddos. They’ve created a welcoming environment!

We were disappointed by our experience with this office. During our first visit with our toddler, we didn't see the dentist profiled on the website. I asked via e-mail who this person was and received no clarification of credentials. Three months later we scheduled an appointment to check on a spot I noticed developing on our toddler's molar, again we saw someone other than the dentist profiled. During this appointment were told that 'everything looked fine' and that the spot was a stain.

At our third appointment three months later, we finally met Dr. Tyler. Our discussion with him gave us the impression that we should have our 2. 5-year-old anesthetized for caps on all of his molars. It was also suggested that we delay treatment until his two-year-old molars came in, in case more work was needed.

This made us feel like they were after $$$. We visited a different dentist office shortly after for a second opinion, and we were told one filling was needed for one cavity ASAP, and that all other teeth could be managed with good oral hygiene practices. Clearly this dentist works well for a lot of folks, based on the reviews - though probably more so if you have a child with perfect teeth!
