Detailed Introduction
St. Claire HealthCare, now also known as UK St. Claire, is a comprehensive and integrated healthcare system based in Eastern Kentucky. Founded on July 1, 1963, as a 41-bed general acute care hospital, it was named in honor of Dr. Claire Louise Caudill, a dedicated physician who spearheaded the initiative to establish a hospital in Morehead. The organization is sponsored by the Sisters of Notre Dame - Covington Province and operates as a Catholic, not-for-profit entity.
Over the decades, St. Claire HealthCare has expanded significantly from its humble beginnings. Today, it stands as the largest rural hospital in Northeastern Kentucky, complemented by a network of seven primary care locations spread across five counties. The system also includes a multi-specialty medical pavilion, two urgent care centers, a pediatrics clinic, a retail pharmacy, a counseling center, and a medical equipment and supply store. Additionally, St. Claire HealthCare provides crucial home health and hospice services across eight counties within its 11-county service region, demonstrating a commitment to serving a broad population of over 160,000.
With over 1,300 staff members, including more than 125 medical providers representing over 30 medical specialties, St. Claire HealthCare is a significant regional employer. Its services are diverse, covering areas such as aesthetic medicine, bariatric surgery, cancer care, cardiology, dentistry (which includes Dr. Albert Vollmer, III, DMD at the Frenchburg location), diagnostic imaging, emergency care, gastroenterology, inpatient rehabilitation, orthopaedics & sports medicine, pain management, pediatrics, pharmacy, primary care, surgical services, therapy services, and wound care, among others. The organization maintains a strong affiliation with the University of Kentucky, serving as an established training site for their physician residency programs, fostering education and providing specialized practices.
