Detailed Introduction

The U of MN / Hibbing College Community Dental Clinic is a unique collaborative venture established through a partnership between the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and Minnesota North College – Hibbing Campus. Located at 1515 E 25th St, Hibbing, MN 55746, this clinic plays a dual role: it serves as a crucial educational site for future dental professionals and a vital source of dental care for the community. As an outreach clinic of the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, it provides hands-on clinical experience for dental, dental therapy, and dental hygiene students under the direct supervision of experienced faculty. This educational model ensures that students gain practical skills and a deep understanding of delivering care in a rural setting, especially to underserved populations. The clinic is particularly significant for students in the Minnesota North College – Hibbing Campus's accredited Dental Assisting program, allowing them to apply their classroom knowledge in a real-world clinical environment. The clinic's primary mission is to provide comprehensive and affordable dental services to the residents of St. Louis, Lake, Cook, and Carlton Counties, addressing the significant need for oral healthcare in these often underserved areas. Services offered at the clinic encompass a broad spectrum of general dentistry, including but not limited to: Preventive care: Dental exams, cleanings, and oral hygiene instruction. Restorative care: Fillings, crowns, bridges, and dentures (full and partial). Emergency care: Addressing urgent dental needs. Other treatments: Root canals, extractions (including most wisdom teeth), and pediatric dentistry (care for children aged 1-15). Being a teaching clinic, appointments may take longer than in a private practice setting due to the supervisory and educational aspects, but fees are generally more affordable, often around 30% less than average fees in the Twin Cities community. The clinic accepts various payment methods, including cash, credit cards, CareCredit, and most private insurance plans, as well as Medical Assistance and Minnesota Care, making dental care more accessible to a wider range of patients. The U of MN / Hibbing College Community Dental Clinic is a testament to community collaboration, fostering dental education while enhancing oral health access for rural Minnesotans.

Decent clinic although make sure that they use the curing machine when getting fillings done as family members of mine have had fillings fall out of their teeth due to the students practicing here neglecting to do so. Also, if you ever request your dental records be sent out, there is a clause in tiny print at the bottom of the form stating that they will drop you as a patient and no longer be your dentist if you submit the Release of information.

This angered me when I had to see a cosmetic dentist and have the treatment history for the other facility as HCC doesn’t do this type of work, and I still needed dental care for my regular cleanings and preventative care- something that a cosmetic dentist does not do which led me to have personal problems and arguments with their front desk scheduler and receptionist Mary. Their dental hygienist on staff is rough and makes my gums bleed every time- if she used a hydro-pic like other dental assistants this wouldn’t be a concern.

Denied access to Nitrous Oxide because a pregnant woman works at the facility. Every patient who needs Nitrous is being denied much needed medicine because of one person. No accommodations or alternatives for anxiety or pain relief was offered though it is listed on the website that they offer Nitrous. They gave me a strike for not going to my appointment because they refused me Nitrous. Three strikes and you are no longer allowed to go there apparently.

The previous year I went there the cleaning tool water jet malfunctioned multiple times and seemed to be spraying boiling water onto my gums. If someone cannot work around a common medicine used in the dental clinic then they should not be working or make accommodations for the patients who need it. They have multiple rooms where I have had cleanings done, but they will not even entertain the idea and got all sassy with me on the phone when I said I wanted to file a complaint and would not give me any information on how to do so.
