Detailed Introduction

The Department of Orthodontics at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Dentistry is a highly esteemed institution with a rich history dating back to 1929. It is recognized as one of the oldest continuing orthodontic programs globally, dedicated to the advancement of dentistry's oldest specialty through research, teaching, and patient care. As a part of a major university, the department operates as both an academic center for training future orthodontists and a comprehensive clinic providing patient services. It offers a three-year specialty training program leading to a Specialty Certificate in Orthodontics and a Master of Science (M.S.) in Oral Sciences degree, preparing residents to become American Board of Orthodontics diplomates. The curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and extensive clinical experience in diagnosis, treatment planning, biomechanics, orthognathic surgery, and interdisciplinary procedures. The clinic provides a full spectrum of orthodontic services for children, adolescents, and adults. This includes traditional metal braces, clear and ceramic braces, self-ligating braces, and advanced clear aligner therapies like Invisalign®, Spark, and 3M Clarity aligners. They also specialize in early and interceptive treatment for young children, dentofacial orthopedics for proper skeletal growth, and complex cases requiring combined surgical-orthodontic treatment, such as those involving jaw deformities or cleft lip and palate. UIC Orthodontics prides itself on incorporating the latest technologies and innovations. This includes advanced orthodontic diagnostics like 3D CBCT imaging, 3D facial scanning, 3D treatment simulation, and intraoral scanning (e.g., SureSmile® and Insignia). They also offer hidden (lingual) braces, such as 3M Incognito and Harmony, providing discreet treatment options. The department is actively involved in cutting-edge research in areas like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning in orthodontics, ensuring that patient care is shaped by the most recent scientific advancements. Committed to accessibility, the UIC Orthodontics clinic is one of the largest Medicaid providers in Illinois, aiming to improve access to orthodontic care for all who need treatment. They offer a free initial examination to assess patient needs and provide transparent estimates of treatment costs, along with no-interest financing plans for patients without insurance. The team comprises highly experienced, often board-certified, full-time faculty members who are leaders in the field, alongside resident trainees, providing a collaborative and high-quality care environment.

It costs less to get your braces done here, but the work they do isn’t that well, it all depends on who you get.

I have mostly straight teeth but wanted Invisalign to correct some minor issues. My insurance doesn't cover orthodontic treatments, but I heard that going to a dental school like UIC might be more affordable. That is why I came here for a consultation. Thank GOD I also got a consultation at a regular orthodontic clinic before coming here. UIC quoted me $5,103 and an 18-month treatment plan, not to mention it took me 4 months just to get this initial consultation appointment.

The other orthodontist I went to, who isn't part of a dental school, gave me a quote of $4,219 with a treatment time of 6 to 9 months. If you're considering going to UIC College of Dentistry Orthodontic Clinic for cheaper treatment, I urge you to get a consultation at a regular clinic first. You might not save as much money as you expect by coming here, and the treatment could take longer. In my case, the dental school was actually more expensive.
