Detailed Introduction
The Department of Operative Dentistry is a core component of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics, located in Iowa City, IA. It plays a foundational role in educating pre-doctoral dental students, residents, and continuing education for practicing professionals. Their primary focus is on establishing the concepts of operative dentistry, which encompasses the diagnosis, prevention, repair, and restorative techniques for dental caries (cavities), as well as non-carious dental defects (such as attrition, abrasion, erosion, and developmental abnormalities).
The department offers various levels of patient care, including dental student clinics (supervised by faculty and residents), resident clinics, and a Faculty General Practice clinic. They accept referrals for comprehensive and limited restorative and esthetic dentistry cases. Services provided include comprehensive exams for caries risk assessment, various types of dental fillings (composite, glass ionomer, amalgam), crowns and indirect restorations (gold, ceramic, onlays, veneers, CAD/CAM), and esthetic treatments like teeth whitening and complex tooth reconstructions. They also incorporate digital dentistry, including CAD/CAM restorations and 3D printing of dental restorative materials.
Beyond patient care, the department is a significant hub for research and development. Faculty and students conduct clinical and laboratory research to develop novel biomaterials and therapies aimed at preventing and managing caries, and improving the quality and longevity of existing dental treatments. Their core research areas include dental biomaterials, digital dentistry and esthetics, minimally invasive dentistry and cariology, and dental educational research. They are known for their leadership in incorporating concepts like caries risk assessment, selective caries removal, dentin bonding, and resin-based composite technology into their curriculum and practice. The department also offers a 36-month Advanced Education Program leading to a Master of Oral Science degree and a Certificate in Operative Dentistry, attracting students from around the world.
