Detailed Introduction

The TMD, Orofacial Pain and Dental Sleep Medicine Clinic is a specialized division of the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, located within the Malcolm Moos Health Sciences Tower at 515 Delaware St SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455. This clinic operates as an integral part of an academic institution, serving both as a patient care facility and a training ground for dental residents pursuing advanced education in Orofacial Pain, which became an ADA-recognized specialty in 2020. The clinic provides comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for a wide range of complex conditions related to temporomandibular disorders (TMD), chronic orofacial pain, and dental sleep medicine. This includes, but is not limited to, jaw pain (often referred to as TMJ pain), jaw clicking, locking of the temporomandibular joint, difficulty using the jaw, chronic headaches (including migraines and tension-type headaches), neuropathic pain conditions (like trigeminal neuralgia), burning mouth syndrome, and sleep-related breathing disorders such as snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). A key aspect of their approach is the integration of multidisciplinary care. Patients may be evaluated and treated by a team of specialists that can include dentists, physical therapists, and health psychologists, among other physician specialists as needed. Treatment plans are highly individualized and may involve a combination of therapies such as supervised home programs, exercises, habit modification, oral appliance therapy (e.g., custom-fitted night guards for bruxism or mandibular advancement devices for sleep apnea), therapeutic injections (including Botox for chronic migraine and TMJ-related pain), biofeedback, behavioral modification, pharmacotherapy, acupuncture, and nerve blocks. As a specialty clinic within a university setting, they emphasize evidence-based practices and are involved in both clinical care and ongoing research. They accept most medical insurance plans, given that these conditions are often covered under medical rather than dental insurance. Patients are typically referred to this specialty clinic, either from the university's comprehensive care clinics or from private practices, though direct contact is also possible. The clinic is committed to improving access to interdisciplinary care for patients suffering from these often debilitating conditions, aiming to enhance comfort and function.

Staff is nice but cross wires a lot. It will take a very long time to get in.

My initial appointment was a TMD consultation. I was diagnosed with it over a decade ago and all this appointment did was confirm that yes, I still have it. The doctor probably spent 10 minutes with me total, no imaging or scans of any sort were done and I was sent home with instructions to massage it daily. Thanks, so helpful for my chronic pain.

Then the clinic failed to bill it properly to my insurance. We were unable to reach anyone in billing for TWO MONTHS, and the front desk lady literally said “there is no people up there” for us (me and insurance) to talk to, and continued sending us to a voicemail that wasn’t being checked. Only after I threatened filing an appeal with my insurance did someone finally contact me, not a half hour later. They finally resubmitted the claim under the proper clinic name a total of 3 months after my appointment.

Needless to say I will not be going through them for any physical therapy or any future appointments. Unfortunately this means starting from square one with another clinic and paying for another consultation to confirm I have TMD (for the third time. ) An extremely disappointing and expensive experience with absolutely no progress made for my daily pain.

Very kind and caring staff and receptionists. They don’t believe in ableism and help protect peoples best/ healthiest interests. Also the care I receive for physical therapy is amazing, my PT nurse is very kind and incredibly informative about my disorder. Also thank you to the receptionists for all the work you do, and the kindness and compassion you have for patients health and safety.

You all are great. I’d recommend this clinic to friends with similar issues for TMD, etc.

Doctor was nice, but be aware of extremely long scheduling to get an appointment, or followup appointment. I had bad TMD pain, and with a doctors referral had to wait fully 8 months to get the first appointment. At the appt the doc recommended a night guard.

"We can scan you for one *in 6 months*, then fit you for it a few weeks after that"-- so, all told it will take *well over a year* from first referral to get a simple night guard from this practice. IMO, that is far, far too long to get treatment.
