Detailed Introduction

Willamette Dental Group is a prominent dental care organization founded in 1970 by Eugene Skourtes, DMD, in Portland, Oregon. It operates as a large, integrated delivery system with over 50 dental offices across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, serving over 430,000 members. What distinguishes Willamette Dental Group is its unique approach to dental care, which integrates evidence-based practices, clinical leadership, and comprehensive, simplified insurance products. Unlike traditional fee-for-service models, Willamette Dental Group focuses on a value-based payment model, incentivizing providers for improving health outcomes, timely care, and high patient satisfaction rather than just performing procedures. Their core philosophy centers on proactive, preventive dentistry. They aim to stop the "disease-repair cycle" by using the latest scientific research to create customized treatment plans that prioritize preventing dental issues before they become severe. This includes comprehensive exams, digital X-rays, oral cancer screenings, caries and periodontal risk assessments, oral hygiene instruction, and sealants. They utilize advanced digital technologies, including electronic dental health records, digital radiography, CBCT scans, and 3D printing for various dental appliances. Willamette Dental Group offers a wide array of comprehensive dental services, covering everything from general dentistry to specialized treatments. These services include fillings, crowns, various tooth replacement options (implants, bridges, dentures), pediatric dentistry (with in-house sedation options and hospital services), orthodontics (traditional braces and Invisalign), endodontics (root canals), and oral and maxillofacial surgery. The patient experience is a significant focus for Willamette Dental Group. They are committed to transparency, publishing unfiltered patient experience survey ratings and comments online. They emphasize a patient-first approach, striving to provide a safe, non-judgmental environment where patients feel empowered and educated about their oral health. Their integrated model with in-house insurance aims to provide predictable, low out-of-pocket costs and eliminate annual maximums and deductibles for covered services. Willamette Dental Group also demonstrates a strong commitment to community involvement, supporting higher education and various community initiatives through The Skourtes Institute, which focuses on advancements in oral health through research and training.

I have extreme anxiety when it comes to dental care but had to go in due to an infected tooth. Anna the dental assistant and the dentist were both very kind, caring and patient with me during the whole appt. One of the best dental experiences I have had. Would recommend both the dentist and dental assistant to anyone that has anxiety going to the dentist!

*Israel & reception staff in Lacey 5+ stars; exp in Tumwater 1 star. * Communication from dentist (Dr. Estella) and dental assistant could’ve been much improved. Overall experience was not what I would call “gentle” dentistry, and I definitely felt like an inconvenience, just one more person to "get through" for the day. I could tell the DA was annoyed with me and wanted to be done. I’ve never been nervous to visit the dentist but fear I will be now. The experience was painful and I don’t know that the work was even necessary. (DA was also doing the same work as the dentist; is that normal?) Four hands + instruments + the gauze rolls and (the thankfully) flexible braces holding my cheeks open were a lot. Doable? Could’ve been.

It’s one thing to realize your patient’s gums are numb and you can do what you need to in that area, but PLEASE understand a person’s mouth can only open as far as it can. The forceful reaching in, the jaw stretching and forcing the sides of my mouth apart so much that they tore, and the pull of the metal instruments over very dry lips… it’s painful in the moment and even after the visit. I left with jaw pain and lip/mouth soreness like I’ve never had before. (For reference: I’ve had braces and even had wisdom teeth removed a couple of years ago without sedation; that was easy breezy compared to this. ) The jaw pain has subsided (pain is now just in the gums where work was done) but my lips and the corners of my mouth are still very raw and sensitive; it took 12 days of healing before I could attempt to floss due to the rawness. Kudos to the other dental assistant who wrapped things up at the very end who was super friendly and personable, though I didn’t get her name. ****UPDATE**** It's now 5/9/25 and clearly a number of months post-work. The pain is still present, though not as constant or as strong, so that's a plus. (The original pain lasted through March.

) As for having the work done? Total waste of time; clearly just looking for something to make money on. Food used to get stuck maybe a few times a week on the right side only; food now gets stuck EVERY MEAL of EVERY DAY on BOTH SIDES. The "fix" they did on the right side is also still (and will always be) very rough with a very noticeable sharp bit, particularly on the backside where my tongue instinctively goes to try and dislodge stuck food. My mouth bled every time I brushed my teeth but that's down to only about 75% of the time now (I never had this issue before the work in December), but my gums bleed in those two spots every time I floss -- which, of course, is more frequent because food is always stuck there now. Yep. Still extremely displeased with the work done and only wish I could go back in time and stay the heck away from this place.
