About
Dr. Carter Edge was born in Bitburg, Germany, son to Air Force parents. His first memories at around three years old are of his father in dental school at Emory University and his mother's support as a school teacher. At that point in his life, he knew that dentistry would be his life and profession. Dr. Edge grew up in Canton, Georgia, (his father's home town) and attended Canton Elementary School and Cherokee High School. He transferred to Darlington School in Rome, GA where he graduated in 1973. He attended the University of Georgia for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1975. His first job in the Army was a helicopter mechanic. But his main motive for entering the Army was two-fold, to earn the GI Bill for future college education and to attempt to join the U.S. Army Parachute Team, The Golden Knights. After going through Airborne School and earning Instructor/Jumpmaster and Expert parachutist ratings, he applied for and was inducted into the team in 1977. On one particular day in 1978, while jumping into the Chicago Air and Water Show on Lakeshore Drive, (then) Sgt. Edge landed his parachute in front of the love of his life, his future wife, Lizzette. One of the things they had in common while talking that afternoon was that they both wanted to be dentists! They were married in 1982 and attended Kennesaw College (now KSU) to finish the requirements to apply for dental school. They entered the Medical College of Georgia in 1984. While attending dental school, he worked in the Oral Pathology Department, assisting in dental implant research. After graduating in 1988, he re-entered the Army as a Captain and dental officer. Reassuring Lizzette that he would not be in harm's way, he was assigned to the 24th Infantry Division but always worked in the Dental Clinic. When Lizzette was 6 months pregnant with their first child, he was deployed to Saudi Arabia after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait where he remained until the end ot the Desert Storm War. During that time he performed routine dental procedures on soldiers ranging from fillings to extraction of wisdom teeth. During combat his duties changed to that of triage officer for his forward medical company. While on their way to the Euphrates River, he was in charge of five ambulances where they would trail behind the battle from a distance of a mile. With no friendly casulties, his men asked permission to perform a humanitarian mission of rescuing enemy wounded. When permission was granted, he and his team selected 26 of the worst wounded encountered, provided life-saving aid, and monitered them until medevacs carried them off to rear hospitals. After returning home to Lizzette and meeting his 5 1/2 month-old-son, Carl Carter Edge IV, he left the Army, finishing on a great note: receiving the Bronze Star for actions during the war. In 1991, they relocated to Acworth, GA where their second son, Allen Taylor Edge, was born. Since then, they have enjoyed living in the growing four-county area and the long term relationships developed with patients, watching their families grow (along with the Edge boys), and providing them with high quality, modern dentistry. Outside of practicing dentistry, Dr. Edge enjoys riding his motorcycle (2002 Fatboy) and of course, skydiving. After a 27-year hiatus, his older son convinced him to return to the sport. The entire Edge family has done several jumps together. He and his son Carl jump on a regular basis. With his other son Allen, they enjoy cycling on the Bartow County back roads. On a more personal note, he is an avid guitar player and history buff. He is 100 percent fluent in Spanish.
