I went to Dr. Abbott for sleep apnea when I couldn’t tolerate CPAP. His oral appliance saved my life. Dr. Abbott is extremely skilled and knowledgeable. He has good ideas to make an appliance work, but was also patient about listening to my experience and trying what I wanted to try. His staff is also excellent at helping with scheduling and insurance. If you are considering an appliance for apnea I would highly recommend him.
It's difficult to figure out which doctor to see about TMJ problems and facial pain and decide on the right treatment. It can be unclear whether it's a medical or dental issue. From my experience, seeing an orofacial pain specialist such as Dr. Abbott is better than seeing dentists who also do TMJ treatment as part of their regular practice. Before finding Dr. Abbott I saw dentists who recommended that I get expensive and probably unneeded orthodontics and procedures. For example, a dentist provided an expensive bite adjustment that didn't help. By contrast, Dr. Abbott correctly diagnosed my problem, took a systematic and conservative approach, and referred me to other doctors for related treatment. He's a caring person who provides the time needed to understand your situation and his staff are very helpful. He's also a Blue Cross medical provider so procedures such as injections are much less expensive than what you would pay at other dentists' offices.
Dr. Abbott was ready to explain to me what was happening based on my registration forms (which didn't include a request for current meds!), as well as records from other docs.... and it was only because I interjected multiple times to add relevant info that he adjusted his impressions and diagnosis. Speak up and insist he listen. He even said to me, "sorry I know I can be cocky and condescending," so I give him an A for self-awareness. There were times he was also very dismissive, and again, I held my ground and asked for explanations why beyond, "trust me I've seen this over and over again."
I appreciate that Dr. Abbott spends a whole hour one-on-one, and that, unlike previous sleep dentists, I got to see him and not a dental assistant. He is work, though, as, more than most docs, you need to push back and question.
Dr. Abbott has been extremely helpful as I have navigated life with sleep apnea. He clearly cares about his patients' comfort with their devices and works with you to make any changes that might be necessary. He'll take time to answer questions and explain how things work. I trust his opinion and really value his experience.
