Care Philosophy

Our patients submit themselves to a very trusting relationship with us and I do not take that responsibility lightly. I offer Orthodontic care exactly the same way as I do for my own family. First, we devote an entire hour to the initial consultation appointment. Although this visit is complimentary, we put a lot of effort into making sure that our patients know the following: 1. What problems we are seeing in their mouth, 2. What can be done to correct their concerns, 3. What the options are for any proposed treatment, 4. What are the costs of any treatment, how long will the treatment take to complete and what the treatment will look like, 5. How we can help finance any treatment to make it easily affordable. I place each brace and bend each wire with my own two hands. Delegation may make financial sense to some but to me it is not in the best interest of our patients overall care and so we just don't delegate the treatment to staff. I feel strongly that this leads to a more comfortable, quicker and better result. I also keep in mind that my responsibility to our patients is to make Orthodontic care affordable. We do not consider two-stages of necessary to be in the best interest of our patients and their family's except in rare situations when waiting to correct an early onset problem will cause harmful effects. For instance, making the front four upper permanent teeth straight while knowing the patient will almost certainly need a second stage of treatment is just not done in my office.

There was a patient coughing in the waiting room and I decided to walk around it a bit far from him while my child was seen as this doctor does not allow the parents to be with their children at the time of consultation. I have carpal tunnel syndrome and have used a stick to carry my cellphone for years. I typically put it in my bag however that day with the rush I had no bag with me, I was just carrying my cellphone with the stick while walking around. At some point I was looking thru the big window in the waiting room as I did not want my face to be in the direction of the sick person and I could see my child in the distance. Dr Levens came out visibly angry and asked me if I was recording (?!??) Why would I do that???? I showed him my phone completely off but I was so surprised by his question, confrontational attitude, and more importantly his anger !!! I found this offensive and awkward. We will never go back to his office!!!

Initially, he tried to discredit other doctors to get our business. Later he saw our kids apparently "for free" as no claims were submitted to the insurance. Overtime we noticed it was not an act of generosity but we were experiencing his selection process as he personally studies every single interaction with his office to decide who he treats. Initially he suggested invasive treatments and since no one in our very large family experienced anything like that before, we asked for alternatives. He got visibly annoyed and surprisingly defensive. It took him 3 minutes to explain and that was enough for us at that time, however we did not want to ask more so he would not get "offended" Years later, when we thought the treatment would start, he brought that up showing deep resentment and declined to treat our child. Contrary to his verbal refusal where he clearly said we annoyed him, he sent a certified letter stating he would not treat us because of complete different reasons. Beware!
