“I was raised in Chicago, and I never saw a dentist until I was in pain; I was in pain a lot. We had no dental insurance, and our access to care was limited. I experienced my first extraction at the young age of 15, followed by another extraction, and another. Finally, around the age of 17, I really started taking care of my teeth. After numerous traumatic experiences, I became a teenage “dental educator.” I spoke to my friends at school, neighbors, even strangers, about the importance of dental hygiene. I soon found myself wanting to become a dentist. My dream came true, and I am still the “dental educator,” now educating my parents with a sincerity that can only be found in someone who has truly walked in their shoes. “When I’m not caring for my patients, I create food furniture by mixing wood and steel together. I am a theatre and live music enthusiast. I am still learning to swim and speak Spanish, in that order.”
