I was referred by a local dentist and was initially grateful to get a next-day appointment for a root canal. Unfortunately, my experience quickly turned disappointing. Once I was in the chair, I was handed a document stating I needed a CBCT 3D X-ray that wouldn’t be covered by insurance and would cost between $395 and $500. This was the first I’d heard of it, and I felt completely blindsided. After reading the paperwork I understood that 3d Xray was NOT required, so I did not agree to it. Dr. Maya Prabhu came in shortly after and began promoting the 3D scan, explaining that they use the latest technology.

When I asked why patients aren’t informed of this additional cost ahead of time—she told me it was my responsibility to read through information on their website. I told her I did go on the site—because her own staff instructed me to do so—but only to fill out the required patient forms. I wasn’t told to go fishing for cost disclosures buried elsewhere, especially for procedures I wouldn’t know to question as someone who isn’t an Endodontist. That’s not informed consent—that’s shifting the blame onto patients to cover for a lack of transparency. I asked if the procedure could be done without the scan, and she said she wouldn’t feel comfortable performing the root canal without it. At that point, I chose to leave—still in pain and now extremely frustrated, and having missed an important work commitment for nothing. It also makes me wonder — if this scan isn’t required, how are other endodontists able to perform root canals successfully without it? It felt more like a sales tactic than a medical necessity.

I later reviewed their website and found no clear indication that patients would be required to undergo expensive, optional imaging in order to receive treatment. This practice felt dismissive and not patient-centered. I shouldn’t have to dig through a website to learn about significant, non-covered costs—especially when I’m already seated and prepared for a procedure. I missed a day of work for nothing, but you know what, I’ll take my Tooth Pain like a champ and find an endodontist who is transparent and respectful of patients’ time, pain, and financial decisions.
