Detailed Introduction

Penn Dental Medicine is the official name for the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, an Ivy League institution located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Established in 1878, it is one of the oldest university-affiliated dental schools in the United States. Its history traces back to the Philadelphia College of Dental Surgery, founded in 1852. The school is a significant provider of oral health care to the Philadelphia community, serving thousands of patients annually in its clinical teaching facilities and other locations. Penn Dental Medicine operates as a teaching clinic, where dental services are provided by predoctoral and postdoctoral students under the close supervision of a large and experienced faculty. This model allows the institution to offer a wide range of dental services, from general restorative dentistry to specialized procedures in areas like endodontics, periodontics, and orthodontics, all while maintaining high standards of care. The institution emphasizes a patient-centered approach, where treatment plans are developed in collaboration with the patient. Beyond patient care, Penn Dental Medicine is a prominent research institution. It is one of the few dental schools in the nation with its own basic science faculty, and it is a leader in oral health sciences research. The school's research enterprise is multidisciplinary, spanning both basic and clinical sciences, and it has a history of innovation in the field, with faculty members who have made significant contributions to dental science and practice. The campus is a hub of dental education and care, featuring interconnected buildings, including the Robert Schattner Center, the Thomas W. Evans Museum and Dental Institute, and the Leon Levy Center for Oral Health Research. Penn Dental Medicine is committed to providing accessible care, and it operates teaching clinics as well as a multi-specialty dental practice called Penn Dental Family Practice.

Horrible horrible place. First of all the secretaries that work there are the meanest people I've ever met. They were so rude to me and my 10-year-old daughter who was very afraid to get her teeth done. The secretary literally yelled at me and my daughter meanwhile I'm trying to get my daughter to be brave enough to get her teeth done. Second of all she got one root canal down there and it took so long it was so painful for her that she's probably scarred for life forever getting dental work again.

They're definitely unprofessional and I never should have went there and I'm looking into other options where I can get my daughter's teeth done. And they charge you a lot of money for the butcher job they do. If I were you I would not go here and I would look into another place to get your dental care.

It’s definitely time for a change, all 4 of my kids have been coming here since their very first dental visit and I’ve given MULTIPLE CHANCES but I can’t take the u professional wait in the pediatric department. My biggest issue is no one is never on the same page in this place, front desk says one thing. Dental student say one thing, actual dentist say another! Yall should all be training from the same handbook so I don’t get why everyone doesn’t know the same thing. Don’t give a grace period and still make the patient wait 1. 5 hours to be seen.

A simple cleaning should be 30-45 min tops! If u late they will re schedule. If they’re late, they’ll make u wait and then act like nothing wrong once u get to the back. Nah, think again.

My son was born at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and is a medically complex patient with an extensive history of specialist care. Over the past decade, I’ve gained a wealth of knowledge through advocating for him and navigating countless appointments. One unfortunate experience I had was with Penn Dental Pediatrics. My son needed dental work while he was already scheduled to go under anesthesia for procedures with two other specialists. Naturally, I turned to Penn Dental to coordinate his care, only to be told that CHOP “doesn’t work well with them” and makes coordination difficult. Penn Dental shifted all the blame onto CHOP and told me I needed to advocate for my son—as if that wasn’t something I was already deeply committed to.

From the start, it was clear Penn Dental lacked organization. Something as simple as faxing imaging became a hassle—the resident repeatedly failed to send it to the correct email, despite multiple follow-ups from me. That was just the beginning of a long, frustrating experience where I constantly had to chase answers and be the middleman between them and CHOP. It became increasingly clear that the issue was not with CHOP’s communication—it was with Penn Dental’s lack of follow-through. Eventually, no one was getting back to me, so I took matters into my own hands. That didn’t sit well with them, but I made it clear: I wasn’t going to let anyone jeopardize my son’s safety.

I chose not to proceed with any dental procedures at Penn Dental because I lost all confidence in their ability to provide safe, reliable care. As a mother of a medically fragile child, I trust my instincts—and I had grave concerns about a potential medical error if we continued with them. I would never recommend Penn Dental Pediatrics based on our experience. If your child has complex medical needs, think very carefully before putting their care in these hands.

I had positive impressions. I take two children here, they like it very much, they are not afraid to come here and do everything the doctor says. Usually we were accepted on time, but the last time we really had to wait a very long time, it certainly upset me, but I understand that there are different circumstances, I just hope that it will not happen again in the future
