Smiles SC, formally known as
SC Smiles Dental, is a non-profit company (registered 501(c)(3) organization) committed to addressing the critical need for oral healthcare among disadvantaged children in South Carolina. Their core mission is to provide essential dental services by removing common barriers such as lack of dental coverage, inability to pay, and transportation issues.
The organization primarily operates through a school-based program. This approach allows them to deliver
dental care directly to children in their school environment, significantly reducing missed school time for students and eliminating the need for parents to take time off work or arrange transportation. Services provided include comprehensive
oral health education,
dental screenings, professional cleanings, protective
fluoride treatments,
dental sealants, and
fillings. They also provide referrals for more extensive dental work when necessary.
SC Smiles Dental emphasizes early detection and prevention of tooth decay, a prevalent childhood problem. They adhere to the guidelines set by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) for School-based Dental Prevention Programs. While they do not receive federal or state funding, they rely on grants, private donations, and fundraising activities, with all administrative costs being donated to ensure that almost all received funds go directly towards patient care.
Initially operating with portable equipment within school buildings, SC Smiles Dental has expanded its capabilities by acquiring a recreational vehicle refitted as a portable dental exam room, enhancing their flexibility in treating students. The organization's history includes operating under the name "Classy Smiles" before changing to "SC Smiles Dental" to better reflect their South Carolina roots and mission. Their dedication has resulted in providing care to numerous children who would otherwise not have received dental services. Michael Maser is associated with this entity.
