Detailed Introduction

Southpoint Pediatric dentistry is a specialized dental practice located in Durham, NC, dedicated to providing high-quality oral healthcare for infants, children, and teenagers. The clinic is led by Dr. Amy C. Davidian, a board-certified pediatric dentist, who emphasizes creating a fun, safe, and compassionate environment for young patients. The office is designed with a unique "rainforest island" theme, featuring a tiki-hut reception desk and a giant banyan tree, along with game and computer centers for kids, and a complimentary Internet station and coffee bar for parents. The practice aims to establish a "dental home" for children from as early as 12 months of age, fostering a trusting relationship between the child, family, and the dental team. Their philosophy centers on making dental visits a positive and non-threatening experience, helping children develop good oral health habits for a lifetime. Southpoint Pediatric Dentistry offers a comprehensive range of services tailored to pediatric needs, including: Preventive Care: Oral hygiene education, comprehensive oral health examinations, professional dental cleanings, fluoride treatments, and dental sealants to prevent cavities. Restorative Treatments: fillings for cavities (using composite resin), extractions for severely damaged teeth, and pulp treatments (pulpotomy) for infected primary teeth. Space Maintainers: Custom-made appliances to hold space for permanent teeth when primary teeth are lost prematurely. Sedation Options: To ensure comfort and manage anxiety, they offer various sedation methods, including: Nitrous Oxide ("Laughing Gas"): A mild, safe, non-addictive gas to help children relax while remaining conscious. Oral Conscious Sedation: Medication given to help children relax deeply during procedures. In-Office general anesthesia: Administered and monitored by a board-certified dentist anesthesiologist (Dr. Edward Davidian), this option is for highly apprehensive or very young children, or those with special needs requiring extensive treatment, rendering them completely asleep. The clinic is equipped with advanced technology, including digital X-rays and high-quality dental materials. They accept most major insurance plans, including Medicaid, North Carolina Health Choice, and Head Start, and offer financing options through CareCredit. The team prides itself on being warm, friendly, and dedicated to explaining procedures in child-friendly terms, ensuring both children and parents are comfortable and well-informed. Dr. Davidian, a native of the Durham/Chapel Hill area, is committed to the community and actively participates in continuing education to stay at the forefront of pediatric dental advancements.

Disappointed and Heartbroken We’ve been bringing all three of our daughters to this dental clinic since they were babies, and we always trusted they would be there when we needed them most. But today, we’re deeply disappointed. My daughter has been in severe pain for three days. Because of the holiday weekend (July 4th fell on Friday), the clinic was closed through Sunday. First thing Monday morning, my wife took her in, hoping someone could at least take a quick look or offer some relief.

Our daughter was crying in pain — and yet, the doctor didn’t even bother to see her. This isn’t just about poor scheduling or being busy — it’s about compassion. When a child is in visible pain, you expect your longtime care provider to show some urgency, some empathy. Sadly, that didn’t happen. The one time we truly needed their help, we couldn’t count on them.

And that hurts. Because of this experience, we’ve decided to take all of our children out of this clinic and find a place that truly puts their patients first — especially in moments of real need.

I’m so glad I made the switch to Southpoint Pediatric dentistry! The office is absolutely adorable—decorated with trees, animals, and fun details that make it feel warm and welcoming for kids. The entire staff is incredibly patient and kind, even when my little guy got a bit loud and scared. They handled everything with such care and professionalism.

It’s clear they know how to work with children and make the experience as stress-free as possible. Highly recommend!
