Virginia Association of Museums

The Virginia Association of Museums (VAM) is a prominent professional organization serving the diverse museum and cultural heritage sector in Virginia. Founded in 1968 as the Virginia History Federation, it evolved to encompass all museum disciplines and officially became the Virginia Association of Museums in 1980. VAM is committed to advocating for the importance of museums within communities and empowering museum professionals throughout their careers. VAM achieves its mission by providing high-quality professional development programs, fostering networking opportunities, and engaging in thought leadership. It offers resources and support to a wide array of institutions, including historic houses, botanical gardens, aquariums, zoos, art museums, galleries, battlefields, military museums, and historical societies. With over 3,000 members, including individuals, businesses, and institutions, VAM is recognized as one of the largest state museum service organizations in the United States. Key aspects of VAM's work include offering a Certificate in Museum Management program, which provides a comprehensive understanding of various facets of museum operations, such as collections care, education and outreach, exhibitions, and human resources. The organization also hosts regional meet-ups and workshops, facilitating collaboration and knowledge sharing among members. VAM actively advocates at both state and national levels to support the museum field and ensure its continued relevance and impact on cultural awareness and community identity across the Commonwealth. It is governed by a 21-member Council comprising museum professionals from various disciplines and regions of Virginia.
