Detailed Introduction

Western Heights Dental is a well-established dental clinic located at 801 W Oldham Ave, Knoxville, TN 37921. Founded in 1982 by Dr. Richard Myers, III, the practice has a long history of serving the Knoxville community and surrounding counties. Their core mission is to provide excellent dental care and educate patients, particularly children and teenagers, on maintaining proper oral health for a lifetime. They emphasize creating a warm, friendly, and non-threatening environment for young patients, aiming to make dental visits a pleasant experience and shape good dental habits from an early age (1-20). Beyond general and preventive dentistry for children, Western Heights Dental also offers specialized services. Dr. Richard Myers is on staff at East Tennessee Children's Hospital, where he provides outpatient dental surgeries for children who require a surgical environment for their dental care, such as those needing significant dental work, or those with physical/mental disabilities or compromised health that prevent them from remaining still in an office setting. They are a TennCare Dental Provider, accepting TennCare Dental and DentaQuest, making quality dental care accessible to a broader range of families. The clinic handles various dental emergencies, offering guidance on issues like toothaches, cut lips, knocked-out teeth, and chipped teeth. While their website focuses heavily on pediatric care, they strive to build lasting relationships with all their patients, emphasizing personalized care from a dedicated team of doctors, assistants, hygienists, and front office staff.

Staff is very friendly and nice, they’re terrible to your teeth though, I’ve heard horror stories all over. I had silver amalgam fillings done here when I was 9 in my entirety of my back teeth. This isn’t okay material for the mouth, it expands and contracts over time and cracks your tooth. I am 19 and had a tooth crack this wouldn’t have happened if it was a different material.

They capped off all of my little brothers teeth before he got his adult teeth, I’ve spoken to older adults that went there, every one of them struggle with teeth issues that have been here due to the work that was done on their mouth as a child. Please go anywhere else for dental. This place is good for cleanings only if anything. They will not let you deny the fluoride paste either.

Once I was whining kinda in the chair because I was in pain, my mother is brought in and hears me and they say “she only started doing this because you came in” they have dropped a piece of glue down my throat while doing capping, it’s scary because when they work on you they’re just talking to eachother the whole time and you know their entire focus isn’t to make sure you get the proper work done but to just get you out of there. So please just go somewhere else it isn’t worth you or child’s teeth

I rarely leave low ratings, but in this case, even one star feels generous. My children were scheduled as new patients for a dental check-up and cleaning, with appointments at 2:30 PM and 3:00 PM. The check-in process was unusual, more reminiscent of early COVID protocols. After checking in, we were told to return to our car and wait for a call when they were ready for us. We didn’t get a call until 3 PM. The waiting area was extremely crowded.

Around 30 seats, all occupied, with additional people standing in the narrow entry corridor between the front door and reception. Others waited in cars or on outside benches. It honestly felt more like the Department of Human Services than a dental clinic. The office appeared overbooked, with far too many people inside, patients and accompanying family members alike.

I went here as a child, and walked away with PTSD. Had teeth cleanings, and removal. They never numbed me properly to remove my teeth, they yanked on one of the overhead lights that proceeded to fall on my brother at the time, and when I had my wisdom teeth removed I looked like I had been choked out for weeks after (swelling and horrible bruising all over my jaw and neck). Just found out a friend of mine ALSO had issues here(being strapped to the chair immediately, and made to sit there till she peed on herself because they wouldn't let her up). Do not go here, ever.

Please, for the love of everything good in this world, go elsewhere. This place has been horrible over a decade ago, and based on the reviews from recent times, it still is. How it's still up and running, I don't know.

I wish I could give less than a star. This practice cares about money and that is it. 90 minute wait on average to get into your appt. They put two caps on my daughter when she was four, didn’t let me back in the room, didn’t numb her properly. She was literally yelling please stop it hurts. I didn’t realize until the next time she had work done at a dentist a few years later that they didn’t numb her at Western Heights.

She said they never even injected anything into her gums. She cooperated because she didn’t want to be put in the straight jacket. It makes me sick that I allowed that to happen because I trusted them. I told our new dentist about all of this and they were not surprised at all. Apparently Western Heights has a bad reputation in the dental field in this area. They know they are traumatizing kids and doing unnecessary dental work.

This place is a TennCare mill. Just because a child has state insurance they think they don’t have to treat them with respect. Poor kids are people too. Go ANYWHERE else
