I absolutely do not recommend that anyone use this dentist in Blacksburg - even if you're a student, find a dentist somewhere else - ANYWHERE ELSE. I suffered repeated damage from this dentist in the late 90s when he drilled through a tooth (and then lied about doing it despite the fact I clearly felt it happen) during what should have been a routine procedure, and then cut a large chunk of my gum tissue out to fix that damage with a crown (the tooth was unsalvagable) and he assured me that the gum tissue would grow back on it's own (another lie).

If I'd been a few years older, I would have known to simply get out of the chair when he first damaged my tooth and immediately find a lawyer for the permanent damage he caused to my teeth. Now I am currently paying THOUSANDS of dollars out of pocket to repair the damage this dentist did to my tooth and gumline with work I feel it is pretty clear he was not qualified nor skilled to do 24 years ago, let alone today.

Find somehwere else to go.

My family and I have been patients of Dr. Ankrum for years (I have been going to him since I was a child) and I would not go to anyone else in Blacksburg. He and his whole staff are caring, compassionate, and put you at ease. They have been invaluable during times of dental crises, ensuring that we get in or get needed referrals.

NOT GOOD WITH CHILDREN! TRAUMATIZED BY NEEDLESSLY ROUGH + PAINFUL PROCEDURE. I received my first filling (a mercury filling) from Dr. Ankrum in the late 90's (as a teenager). The pain was excruciating and I was held down by an assistant during the procedure. Forget the trauma; Mercury has been denounced by the the American Society of Dental Surgeons since 1840. I am having the harmful material removed and replaced with composite. When I called to get my records, the receptionist was very rude and informed me that Dr.

Ankrum uses mercury fillings currently and my records are unavailable. After my first cavity and filling experience at the hands of Dr. Ankrum and his assistant, it took 12 years before I was able to face the dentist's office again. I thought all dentists got off on the suffering of their patients. Luckily, I know that's not true. I have found first-rate, kind+ compassionate dental care elsewhere.

I have been a patient of Dr. Ankrum since the days his mother worked the front desk. He's an old-school doctor who cares for his patients with great kindness. And he's very competent and knowledgeable despite his education (all these years in Blacksburg have had an affect). I bet most patients think of him as an old friend. I know I do.
