Detailed Introduction

North Charleston Dental Outreach (NCDO) is a faith-based, nonprofit dental clinic located at 3625 Azalea Drive in North Charleston, South Carolina. Established in 1998, its mission is to provide quality dental care to low-income, uninsured, and underinsured members of the community who might otherwise lack access to such services. The clinic operates with a small team of full-time staff and a large network of dedicated volunteers, including dentists, hygienists, and other community members. NCDO offers a comprehensive range of dental services, which are available at no or low cost to eligible patients. These services include preventative care like cleanings, diagnostic services such as full mouth x-rays and exams, and restorative treatments like fillings and limited root canals. The clinic also provides emergency extractions for patients experiencing severe pain. A key component of NCDO's model is its commitment to both community service and education. It partners with institutions like the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and Trident Technical College to mentor dental and hygiene students, training the next generation of dental professionals in the value of community service. Patients are required to meet certain income eligibility criteria and may be asked to provide proof of income or a statement of benefits. The organization is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and its work is supported by donations, grants, and community partnerships.

The front desk staff was extremely rude, setting a negative tone from the start. Given that this is a Christian-based establishment meant to serve the community, I expected a more welcoming experience. Instead, every question I asked was met with resistance, interruptions, and an unprofessional attitude. Her sighing and frustration were unnecessary and uncalled for.

This kind of behavior is unacceptable—do better. If you’re looking for a place where you’ll be spoken down to and made to feel small, this would be it.

Warning: DO NOT AGREE for Root Canals treatment at This Clinic I had several root canals done at this outreach dental clinic, and unfortunately, all of them had to be redone due to incomplete treatment. I initially placed a lot of trust in the team—especially because of the clinic’s emphasis on God, faith and kindness. Dr. Bill and the receptionist lady were welcoming, and I was genuinely grateful for the help and followed the treatment plan provided. However, none of the three root canals were filled properly to the end of the canals, which led to infections and significant pain. I later learned from MUSC professionals that the work was far below standard.

Retreatment resulted in more expenses for me than it could’ve been had I originally went with MUSC (which I would’ve appreciated at the time when I hardly understood dental system, if it was advised to me by emergency outreach team, as they knew they simply don’t have good enough specialists and equipment. Instead, I felt like I was used as a practice dummy, & the result did not matter as much). Because the emergency clinic operates on a volunteer basis, they hold no liability for failed procedures, which is what you sign at the beginning. MUSC is a far better choice. Root canals treatment done by students is more affordable, and they are carefully supervised by professors who maintain high standards of care. One of them even told me they would never have allowed such incomplete root canals to pass.

Additional negative experience for me was working with Dr. Fergusson in the room (if I remember his name correctly). When I brought up my symptoms & worries about what turned out to be a starting infection, I was met with passive-aggressive remarks. When I asked for more anesthesia due to pain, he replied, “Say please,” and told the students that I was “too sensitive. ” I wasn’t sure if it was meant as a joke, but it felt dismissive and unkind. For complex procedures like root canals, I strongly recommend going elsewhere—your health is worth it!!
