I was a patient starting in about 2003 at age nine with pretty severe overbite and overjet. Based on the molds I still have, and new knowledge, I now know that I should have had palate expansion and work to encourage the lower jaw to grow forward. Instead, Dr. Vayda had me wear retractive headgear to keep my upper jaw back. This did nothing to correct the problem and only encouraged my face to grow long and narrow.

When my 12 year molars were failing to erupt (no surprise, there was no room since my jaws had been prevented from growing), he prescribed surgery to expose them with the intent to attach chains and pull them up. But after surgery he couldn't get the chains glued on (the opening was too narrow and wet). At this point my mother became disgusted with his platitudes and disturbed with the lack of good results and we switched to Hultgren and Hoxie (they now have a few more doctors in their practice). Dr. Hoxie immediately discontinued the headgear, and after 2hrs, was able to glue chains on my 12 year molars.

They tried Herbst appliances to get my jaw forward, and that was "successful" in that it corrected my overjet, but the headgear damage could not be undone, and I never had quite enough space for my 12 year molars, eventually getting them extracted at age 22. Unless Dr. Vayda has learned a lot in the last 18 years and has extensively changed his treatment model, I cannot recommend him to anyone who has malocclusion due to improper skeletal growth. NEVER EVER allow any orthodontist to in any way retract your upper jaw! Look up orthotropics for a full explanation as to why.
